At first I thought they gambled and drank their lives away, but then I wondered whether they might still be alive, though not fully alive. Either way, it's a warning.

My favourite skull is the one on the right. He's so relaxed . . .

That seems to be the general interpretation of this painting whenever I've looked it up online.

In addition to drinking and gambling, there's also a reference to sex with that mysterious object in the center.

And the skulls look chillingly alive; they look like they're cackling.
