Makes me think of Cezanne saying that when an apple or one of the fruits he was painting started to rot they did it in such a way as to seem that they were apologizing for it.
I was reading it at the time, and just recently finished it - Unfinished Tales. I'm in complete awe of Tolkien's imagination.
I was hoping the solitary "ring" on the cover would be a giveaway. Even though it's not an actual ring but one of Tolkien's beautiful flower/silmaril designs. :)
