Now may I ask what the things at the bottom of the picture are? Youngest Brother has no idea. Getting-Too-Big-for-His-Britches Brother thinks they're mice. And come to think of it . . . Did you ever see the illustrations in Beatrix Potter's Squirrel Nutkin? Some of the squirrels wrap mice up in leaves to make a present of them to an owl. =P
Christopher has it right - they are sprouting garlic. But it's funny your older brother thought of mice, because the mango from the get-go made me think of a big fat rat, with the half-circle of the bottle-bottom as its tail.
And I thought Beatrix Potter was all about innocuous fluffy fluff and whatnot. That is too funny. I'll have to look up those illustrations.

And now that I think about it, there's a fair bit of "animal sacrifice" Squirrel Nutkin. One of Potter's more bloodthirsty works. ;-)
The apple is using his wick as a jousting lance to ward them off.
